From November, there’s a new way to workout at Stourbridge Pilates Rooms.
Joe’s Gym is a small group class where everyone in the room works through their own programme of the original exercises, at their own pace. There’s no choreography and no keeping up with the person next to you. You arrive, you begin your list, and you build on it session by session. The name is a nod to the man who started it all, Joseph Pilates.
Where it began
Since January, Becky has been training with Miguel at UNO Pilates in Portugal, studying the archival repertoire: the exercises as Joseph Pilates originally taught them. To put that training into practice, we asked for volunteers for a case study, and two of our clients stepped forward. They’ve been coming in twice a week to work through the original exercises, initially on the Reformer. Each began with private lessons to learn their exercises, then moved into a shared session where each works through their own list.
Watching how they’ve progressed and how much they’ve enjoyed the freedom of it, is what made us want to open it up to more of you.
How it works
It starts with you. Everyone begins with a private Joe’s Gym Introduction (£45). Together, we’ll build your programme around where you are now.
Then you join the class. Sessions run on Tuesdays and Fridays at 4pm, for up to an hour, with no more than five people in the room. Becky oversees each session, moving between you to guide, correct and add new exercises when you’re ready for them.
Your programme grows with you. We begin on the Reformer, and over time the Wunda Chair and mat work come in too. New exercises are added as you’re ready, never before.
What it feels like
As Georgia, one of our case study clients, puts it:
“I love that I get to have a go at all the fun, exciting things that I probably wouldn’t be considered ready for in a regular class yet. There’s something really empowering about being given the opportunity to try them.”
That’s the heart of Joe’s Gym. It’s a space to try the exercises you’ve always watched from the sidelines, and to take the time to let them click.
Is it for you?
Joe’s Gym is open to new and existing clients. If you’re brand new to Pilates, you’re very welcome, and your Introduction is where we’ll start.
A couple of things to know:
Joe’s Gym isn’t part of our New to the Studio package. It begins with its own Introduction.
It isn’t suitable for anyone currently managing an injury/severe limitations. If that’s you, please get in touch and we’ll help you find the right way in.
